I’m so excited to be able to share with you my Top 10 Beauty Tricks. These beauty tips can make an incredible impact on the look and performance of your makeup application. While I’m sure you have come across many of these before, my hope is that you will pick up at least one hack that will improve your beauty routine!
Look downwards into your mirror when applying mascara. – This will help prevent you from getting mascara on your eyelids during application! If you can’t look down into your mirror just tilt your head back and look into the mirror.
Always dust off excess powder. – While I know many of you already do this, I also know there are a lot of women out there who haven’t even thought of it. It is absolutely vital that you tap off (not blow off! eww germs) excess powder from your makeup brushes before you apply the product. You will dramatically reduce the amount of powder fallout you experience on the face as well as prevent blotchy, uneven makeup application due to having too much product on the brush when it first makes contact with the skin.
Always use a lip liner, even if it’s just a natural shade that matches your lip colour. – No ones lips are perfectly symmetrical. Using a lip liner allows you to create the illusion of perfectly symmetrical lips, gives you the perfect guide for filling in with your lipstick, and helps keep lipstick in place and prevent it from bleeding. This is even more important as you age as your natural lip definition begins to fade and you will notice you no longer have an even, definable outline to the shape of your lips. Lip liner isn’t just for when you are wearing a bold lip!
Layer a cream eyeshadow under your powder eyeshadows. – Layering really is one of the most valuable beauty hacks you can utilize. Layering products increases both the intensity and longevity of the products layered on top. I almost always apply a cream eyeshadow, (usually MAC Painterly Paint Pot), under all of my looks. And yes I still apply an eyeshadow primer first. Rather than using a matte, neutral shade you can also boost the impact of shimmer and metallic shades by layering a metallic cream shadow underneath, or create a unique shade by layering products of different colours and finishes.
Lightly apply mascara to the top of your lashes before moving on to your normal mascara application on the underside of your lashes. – This is especially important if you are fair haired. Not only will this add more depth and definition to your lashes, but it also builds volume. It’s also great at hiding the odd looking result of getting your pale lid primer or shadows on the top of your lashes.
Use multiple foundation primers. – Always struggling to find a foundation primer that meets all your skin’s needs. Well sometimes that really isn’t a realistic goal. Why not apply a pore filling primer only on the areas where you experience enlarged pores, a mattifying primer only in your oily areas, and a hydrating, luminous, or longevity boosting primer on other areas of your face.
Brush out your brows. – Whether you are using pencils, powders, gels, or all of the above to fill and groom your brows it is important to brush them through afterwards with a brow spoolie or brush. Not only to groom brow hairs into shape but also to blend the products into the brows more naturally and eliminate any clumps, or too heavily applied areas.
Blot don’t powder. – If you experience oil breakthrough throughout the day you may be tempted to powder your nose and other areas throughout the day to reduce shine. While this can be effective, it can also cause your makeup to end up looking cakey as you continue to add more product (mixed with oil) to your skin. Blotting papers will suck up extra oil without disturbing your makeup. If you are in a pinch you can try using a single ply layer of a tissue or even the toilet seat liners in public restrooms!
Layer a cream blush under your powder blush. – If you have trouble with your blush fading throughout the day then apply a coordinating shade of cream blush first and set with your powder blush of choice. This will give a glowing from within flush that will last all day.
Match your foundation shade to your chest, not your face or neck, and always in natural light. – Your head, believe it or not, is attached to your body! You want your face to look like it belongs to you and not suffer from floating head syndrome. Most of us, thankfully, take better care to protect our faces from the sun than our bodies. This means that often our faces are a much paler shade than our chest. Our necks are even paler as they are shaded from the sun by our heads. If you match your foundation to your face or neck you can end up with a foundation that can be several shades lighter than your chest. If there is a dramatic difference go with a happy medium shade that falls in the middle which will still yield a much more natural result. If you happen to be naturally uniform in colour than you are one lucky girl and kudos on the excellent sun habits!
