Urban Decay has released a really cool new product that is just so very Urban Decay. Edgy, fun, colorful, and innovative. The Urban Decay Vice Special Effect Lip Top Coat ($18 US/$21 CAD) is a long-lasting and water-resistant formula that can transform any lip color you apply it over.
The formula includes Marine Filling Spheres™ (rich in marine collagen) that work to smooth and moisturize the lips.
There are shimmer, glitter, and metallic finishes available with a total of 12 shades available. I’m so excited to have nine of them to share with you. (Well nine swatches because Copycat was missed in my product shots somehow.)
The 12 shades are:
- Litter – iridescent glitter
- White Lie – iridescent white with blue-violet shift
- 3rd Degree – golden glitter
- Fever – pink-red with green 3D sparkle and shift
- Copycat – bright pink with iridescent glitter
- Regulate – medium purple glitter
- Monarchy – bright purple sparkle
- Reverb – purple with shifty pink-gold sparkle
- Ritual – smoky blue-gray with iridescent 3D sparkle
- Circuit – smoky green with iridescent sparkle
- Bruja – berry with gold pearl
- Seether – metallic red
They have a brush tip applicator which some may not care for but I think the flexibility of a brush is well suited to applying the top coat with as little disruption to the product underneath as possible.
These can be applied over any lipstick but they definitely perform best over a long wearing matte liquid lipstick or a lip liner. That way they can do the proper setting that gives them their long-wearing, waterproof finish. They completely dry down and have a matte finish aside fro the shimmer/glitter they contain. They are incredibly long wearing over a drying type matte liquid lip product. Over a cream lipstick they do improve longevity of the lip colour underneath but not overly so. They also tend to sink into the cream lipstick underneath losing some of their impact and creating a more clumpy kind of texture.
One thing you are sure to notice is there is a rather intense cooling/tingling sensation shortly after application. I at first thought this might have something to do with a high alcohol content in the top coats, but it’s not. It is the locking/sealing action that the top coats do as they set to their budge proof finish. And they do set!
Here is Copycat over Too Faced Melted Matte Liquid Lipstick in Suck It (I don’t have any VICE liquid lipsticks). I mean can you even handle how freaking gorgeous this is (aside from the fact matte liquid lipsticks look so wrinkly on me)? So good!
If you want to see me trying on several of these you can view the Facebook Live video I did the day I received them.
So my overall thoughts on these is that I think they are so beautiful and so much fun to play with. I really love the effect they give and the way you can really transform your lip colours. The only drawback for me is that I can’t stand drying matte liquid lipsticks, and over a cream the wear time and effect aren’t as impressive, so I’ll have to stick to wearing them over lip liners which isn’t quite as fun. But it works! If you are a matte liquid lipstick lover then you absolutely need to try these!
