Glowing Saharienne sunset shades of violet, gold, coral, and bronze. Such a refreshing departure from the usual summer collection colour palettes. The Yves Saint Laurent Marrakesh Sunset 5 Colour Eye Shadow Palette ($72 CAD/$58 US) is my first experience with the YSL Ombres 5 Lumieres palettes. A very different experience from the Pure Chromatics Wet Dry Eyeshadow quads we have seen in previous collections and that I have become hopelessly addicted to. The shades, clockwise, are a bronze brown with subtle golden shimmer, bright violet with purple and teal shimmer, shimmery gold, shimmery coral peach, and the center strip is beige with stunning sparkle.
The packaging is gorgeous. The slender gold packaging we have become accustomed to from YSL with the added touch of a truly beautiful design etched on the lid.
At first I didn’t think I was going to like this palette. The eye shadow formula is a very dry one with a somewhat sheer pigment level. Not what I would typically ever go for. I was also a little uncomfortable with the level of shimmer you see when you behold these eyeshadows in the compact. When I applied the Marrakesh Sunset Palette my preconceptions were totally turned on their head. First of all, in terms of shimmer, the bottom left peachy coral shade and violet shade apply almost completely matte on the lid. Most of the shimmer flecks disappear when you tap off your brush. The top left bronze shade actually works quite well in the crease as it’s base is mostly matte as well and the shimmer is a lot more subtle than it appears in the pan. The gold maintains a good amount of it’s shimmer which is a good thing with this shade and the centre strip of maintains a strong level of multi faceted shimmer which is perfect for the inner corner. The effect of this whole palette on the eyes is truly lovely. The violet shade imparts magic on the lids. It is so vibrant yet has this soft diffused effect. I will show you a full look featuring the Yves Saint Laurent Summer 2013 collection soon!
The limited edition Marrakesh Sunset Palette is available now in the US and will be available in Canada this May 2013 at Holt Renfrew, selected Bay, Murale, and Sephora stores.
