I have one true favourite. It has been a favourite for years and I don’t see it ever changing. It is not only my favourite eye makeup remover but also my favourite makeup remover in general. It is the shu uemura Ultime8 Cleansing Oil($90 US/$98 CAD). All of the shu uemura cleansing oils are amazing but the Ultime8, well, it’s the ultimate! You do not wet your face prior to using. I only need one pump and I take the cleansing oil and rub my hands together and then start with the eyes. Since you use your hands you can gently massage the cleansing oil right into your lashes making removing even the most stubborn waterproof mascara and tightlined eyeliner effortless. This is the only method of eye makeup removal that I find truly removes all traces of tightlined eyeliner. Every other method always manages to leave some eyeliner my waterlines. Once I feel I’ve taken care of my eyes I massage the cleansing oil over the rest of my face. Then you wet your hands and massage the water into your skin to emulsify the cleansing oil. Then it rinses easily away with water. I follow up with a gentle cream cleanser on my Clarisonic or just with my hands but this step really isn’t a necessity as the cleansing oil removes all makeup. Another thing that makes loving the shu uemura cleansing oils even more gratifying is their regular release of super fun specially packaged seasonal releases.

When I want to remove my eye makeup quickly and easily, without having to wash my whole face, or simply to erase mistakes, nothing beats a micellar cleansing water. This is also a staple in my professional kit. Micellar cleansing waters feel as gentle as water yet they still manage to break apart most waterproof products. The best part is you don’t really need to rinse or wash it off afterwards. My favourites are the Bioderma Sensibio H2O Make-up Removing Micellar Solution (truly one of the best out there), and the more affordable L’Oreal Sublime Soft Gentle Micellar Solution. These Micellar solutions are also fantastic for gently removing arm and lip swatches!

Dual phase eye makeup removers remain one of the most effective ways to remove truly stubburn waterproof makeup. They aren’t my favourite as I find they tend to leave a greasy residue after sometimes even after cleansing with another product. I don’t often need to resort to one but when I do the Lancome Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover($29US/$36 CAD)is a cult favourite for a reason. It is very effective. I usually always have a GWP size on hand for travel.
