Urban Decay’s latest collaboration with Disney is celebrating the release of the Alice Through the Looking Glass movie hitting theatres on May 27th, 2016. After the huge success of the Alice in Wonderland Book of Shadows release 5 years ago, this new Urban Decay Alice Through the Looking Glass Eyeshadow Palette ($60 US/$75 CAD) has big shoes to fill. The Alice in Wonderland Book of Shadows sold out on their website in a matter of hours. While this palette is of course still limited edition, I think Urban Decay is a lot more prepared to meet demand this time. I still recommend not delaying if you are intent on having this beauty in your life.
The packaging on this palette is a beautiful work of art. The cardboard packaging is decorated with vibrant and colourful kaleidoscope artwork woven out of flowers and butterflies. You will also find various quotes from the movie in metallic gold script. When you open up the top cover of the palette you find a quote on two lift up doors. Open the door and within you discover a gorgeous 3D plastic butterfly.
The actual eyeshadow palette is revealed by pulling out the bottom drawer. This drawer of shadows pulls right out of the packaging for easy use.
The palette contains 20 eyeshadows and they are all brand new shades. They are organized in columns, with each column inspired by a character in the movie. Alice, Mad Hatter, Mirana (the White Queen), Iracebeth (the Red Queen) and Time (a peculiar creature who is part human, part clock).
Alice shades:
Looking Glass (pale pink demi-matte)
Reflection (soft peach matte)
Dormouse (warm brown matte w/floating gold micro-sparkle)
Metamorphosis (vibrant periwinkle blue w/micro-sparkle)
Mad Hatter shades:
Hatter (vibrant green w/tonal micro-sparkle)
Gone Mad (aubergine w/pink iridescent pearl)
Paradox (vibrant orange w/gold pearl)
Cake (saturated blue-pink w/silver micro-shimmer)
Mirana shades:
Lily (opal pink pearl)
Duchess (peach w/pink shift and micro-sparkle)
Kingdom (copper-bronze pearl)
Chessboard (medium brown matte)
Iracebeth shades:
Heads Will Roll (vibrant turquoise w/gold micro-sparkle)
Bandersnatch (deep teal matte)
Salazen Grum (metallic crimson)
Royal Flush (pale beige shimmer)
Time shades:
Time (black-navy satin w/soft iridescent micro-sparkle)
Dream On (metallic purple-silver)
Chronosphere (metallic deep bronze)
Mirror (gray-taupe satin)
I decided to swatch the shadows in rows rather than the character columns as I found both color-wise, and performance-wise, it’s seemed a little more cohesive. Plus I find this palette works best by creating looks from shadows all over the palette as opposed to any groupings of shades.
I found this palette to be a lot of fun and it functions beautifully as both a neutral palette as well as an adventurous one. There is a great mix of colours as well as finishes ranging from creamy mattes to shifting shimmers. Overall the quality is really great with the only troublesome shades appearing in the second row. Gone Mad and Bandersnatch are quite sheer and patchy. Duchess is quite sheer as well but builds up nicely and the peach to pink shift is stunning. The final shade in the second row, Dream On, is very, very sheer with sparse glitter that creates a lot of fallout. I’ve never seen an Urban Decay shadow with such poor quality before. I’m really not sure how it made it into the palette. Maybe mine is just a dud? My favorite row is the third as it has such rich, buttery shades with amazing colour payoff.
Obviously, given the intricacy and bulk of the packaging, the presentation of the Urban Decay Alice Through the Looking Glass Eyeshadow Palette is as big a factor in your decision to purchase as the shadows inside. I think it is a stunning presentation piece and beautiful addition to any makeup collection.
