A couple of weeks ago I shared with you my thoughts on facial rejuvenation treatments like facial fillers. I really enjoyed hearing all about your experiences and concerns. I’m excited to share with you today some incredibly refreshing changes in the industry being pioneered by Dr. Mauricio de Maio.
I know one of the biggest concerns women have when looking into facial rejuvenation procedures is that they won’t get the results their looking for or be happy with their results. Well Dr. Mauricio de Maio is a world-renowned plastic surgeon from Brazil and he’s developed a new approach called the MD Codes™ that is transforming the industry and the patient/provider relationship to ensure women are happy with their procedure results and feel happy with their results. Because it really does all come down to how we feel. You aren’t looking at treatment options because you want to reduce the wrinkle depth around your eyes by 30% or increase the volume of your lips by 20%. You are going into this experience wanting to feel like you look less tired, younger and rejuvenated. The patient doesn’t necessarily know what injection sites will best achieve these results so it’s important that during the consultation with their physician that they discuss how they want to feel afterwards and not just on where they think they want “fixed”.
I was lucky enough to be able to interview Dr. de Maio, who is absolutely delightful by the way, about the MD Codes™ system that he has developed that helps physicians speak to their patients in a way that zeros in on feelings first and takes into account how they want to feel, and their face as a whole, rather than individual wrinkles and areas, when developing their dermal filler treatment plan. It also maps out the various injection sites and takes into account how areas of the face are indirectly improved by their neighbouring areas. Practitioners are able to show their patients the strategy behind their treatment methods. It even highlights alert areas where it can be dangerous to inject because of facial arteries and where different devices may be called for i.e. needle vs. cannula.
In my interview with Dr. de Maio we talked about the way consultations have always typically been done. A patient comes in to speak to her physician or treatment provider and points out all the areas of concern that they’d like fixed. Then the practitioner would treat those areas. But again and again the patients would feel they haven’t achieved the results they hoped for. Why, if the doctor treated the exact trouble areas the patient wanted addressed, were the patients not satisfied? Dr. de Maio realized that just focusing on the areas the patients wanted treated and correcting them wasn’t creating satisfying results for a lot of clients. He instead decided to start focusing on how the patient wanted to look and feel. Not just on what they wanted corrected. Do they want to look less tired? Less sad? Less saggy? Less angry? More attractive? Younger? Slimmer? More feminine? These are the true results women are looking for. Now the Doctor can look beyond just the specific areas the client may have picked out to be corrected. They can look at the face as a whole and what treatment plan will most achieve the overall objective. The main look and feeling they want to achieve. Dr. de Maio has realized that the consultation has to go beyond discussing particular treatment areas and must begin to address the overall message of the face.
Dr. de Maio travels the world bringing awareness to this shift that needs to happen in the industry and to train doctors on his Md Codes™ approach. I personally would feel so much more confident being treated using Dr. de Maio’s approach. I don’t want to just pop into some office to have fillers put in a specific area. I want to have a real conversation and know my face is being looked at as a whole, and my overall end desire is priority, because addressing the neighboring areas of the face could very well have a more positive impact on my overall look than addressing just the individual issue alone that I see. I believe in putting my best self forward and feeling that I look great gives me confidence. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. It’s not vain to want to look as good as you feel. I have so much more confidence now in how facial fillers can naturally compliment my beauty routine and aren’t something to feel afraid of or embarrassed by. I deserve it, and if you want it, you do too!
Dr. Mauricio de Maio developed the MD Codes™ for use with the Juvéderm® Vycross® Collection, which includes three hyaluronic acid dermal filler products; VOLBELLA®, VOLIFT® and VOLUMA®. With varying consistency, the three products are designed to treat different areas of the face. The Codes suggest which product should be used at each injection point to get the best result. You can use the online clinic connector to find a practitioner in your area and see if they use MD Codes™.
