When I heard that MAKE UP FOR EVER was releasing a full line of the MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Liquid Matte Lipstick ($20 US/$25 CAD) I was very excited. I hadn’t tried the new formula during it’s limited shade release earlier in the year, but I am a fan of the MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Rouge Liquid Lipstick and regularly use them in my pro kit. It was one of the first liquid lipstick formulas I ever used that I actually enjoyed. I knew if they were releasing an updated matte liquid lipstick formula it would have to be impressive. I was not disappointed.
These matte liquid lipsticks are true, traditional matte liquid lipsticks in the sense that they offer full opaque colour coverage and a true matte finish that does not budge AT ALL. You will need an effective oil cleanser to remove these at the end of the day. Thanks to the beeswax in the formula they boast up to 20 hour wear. I think 20 hours is a little excessive but I did easily get 8+ hours wear. They are impressive!
So you’ve heard me say it before, and you’ll hear me say it again, I’m not that big of a fan of matte liquid lipsticks. I don’t find them very flattering unless you have very youthful, plump, smooth lips. The matte finish and drying formulas can really accentuate the less than flattering qualities of your lips. That said I do love the confidence of wearing bolder lip colours in a formula like this. You don’t have to stress about transfer or migration of colour. And regardless of colour it’s pretty fantastic not having to worry about reapplying your lip colour. My lips can’t handle wearing matte liquid lipstick formulas on a regular basis but I do enjoy them for special occasions.
This new Artist Rouge Liquid Lipstick formula is definitely one of my favorites. Yes it is a bit drying on me but it’s a lot more comfortable than the majority of other matte liquid lip formulas I’ve tried. It also looks fantastic. It doesn’t actually suck the life out of my lips. Hallelujah! The inclusion of avocado oil in the formula helps lips feel nourished even with the uber matte formula. It doesn’t crack, flake, or crumble on the lips either. It stays looking quite flattering and the colours are really well executed. I will actually be hanging on to these in my collection and I think I might just have to pick up some more shades to carry in my pro kit. This formula is perfect for bridal work when they need their makeup to hold up all day and night! I definitely need to try some of the nude shades in the 100’s!
