Now this is an eyeshadow palette! I am head over heels in love with the new limited edition Kat Von D Spellbinding Eyeshadow Book ($66 CAD) for Holiday 2013. You really don’t want to miss out on this bad boy!
The palette is made of sturdy cardboard and has a gorgeous sketched illustration on the cover. Once you open the palette you reveal a plastic overlay with the shade names on it. You can fold this up and over the side of the palette and tuck it behind the open cover. The shade names are also on the back of the palette so you could always just remove this overlay completely. I am going to try leaving it on for now to keep the palette tidy and see how long it takes me to get annoyed with it. The inside of the cover also gives three different look suggestions and talks about how this palette was designed for layering.
The shade offering of this palette is incredible. There are so many great neutrals and fun colours. There is one matte cream shadow Countess but the rest are an assortment of shimmers, sparkles, and duochromes. Yes duochromes. Can you see why I am so excited with this palette yet? Just wait until you see the swatches! These eyeshadows are very richly pigmented. I love me some pigmented eyeshadows! They are very soft so can cause a bit of a mess when you pick it up on your brush but I don’t have any issues with fallout as long as I tap off my brush. The Spellbinding Eyeshadow Book is organized of two columns of two shades side by side. The set of shades placed side by side are shades that are designed to pair together and layer to create a new shade and different looks. I have swatches all the pairs below with the individual shades beginning on the left with the layered shade on the far right.
Dark Throne is a matte black charcoal and Precious a shimmering champagne. Together they create a beautiful and complex taupe. Sunset Blvd is a glittery pale gold and 8 Bit a beautiful aqua blue. Together….ugh amazingness! The prettiest blue green.
Holy Bible is an icy pale blue. Oddfellow is a deep teal black with blue glitter that in the right light morphs to deep purple. Together they make a frosty blue grey. These two make the most stunning smoky eye together. I’m wearing them as I type! Instaglam is a shimmering pale pink and Stupid Autocorrect a mid tone mauve pink. Together another gorgeous mauve pink. I’m excellent at colour descriptions eh?
Smile Now is a peach with pink duochrome. Cry Later is an almost matte warm brown base with gold glitter. Together the pink duochrome of Smile Now really comes to life. Queen is a brown with green duochrome reminiscent of MAC Club. Bukowski is a stunning shimmering turquoise blue. Together the duochrome effect shifts more blue and becomes more prominent and complex.
Babe is a bright violet purple. Piaf a perfect shimmering grey. Together a magical dusky purple. Geek is a sateen apricot and warm copper brown. Together they create, well, a different copper brown.
Birdcage is an acid green and Gunner is a grass green with sparkle that is the one pigmentally handicapped shadow in the bunch. It applies much better to the eyes than it swatches though. Together they make a really interesting dirty green. Galore is a frosty ivory and Hexagram a tricky olive green that shifts to brown. All my pics wanted to pick up the brown. Together they create a stunning olive nuanced deep tan.
Arcadia is a pretty shimmery lavender. Wonderland is a deep sparkling plum purple. Together a gorgeous sultry mauve purple. Countess is a matte cream and WTF a burgundy red sateen. Together they make a glowing deep rose.
There you have it. The breathtaking Kat Von D Spellbinding Eyeshadow Book. While I have heard amazing things about Kat Von D’s eyeshadows this is my first time trying the brand and I am SERIOUSLY impressed. I love my eyeshadows pigmented and creamy and these are just that. They last all day for me even without a primer. Add in the fact that they layer beautifully without creating a muddy mess and I am practically palpitating over here! I know my descriptions were somewhat lacking but I can only say complex so many times without sounding a fool. The depth and complexity of the original shades is impressive and layering them just amplifies it. What do you think? Is this the perfect gift for someone on your list? I think it may just be the perfect splurge for any beauty lover, and that includes YOU. 24 eyeshadows with and additional 12 layered shades. Well 12 intended layered shades. Just think of the fun you’ll have creating your own!
