This week the Makeup Wars team is sharing our favorite sunscreens. I’ve got some longtime favorites to share as well as some new ones I’ve been exploring.
After many years, and lots of trial and error, I found My Holy Grail Face Sunscreen a couple of years ago. The Skinceuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 ($34 US/$46 CAD) meets every single one of my requirements in a facial sunscreen. It is a 100% physical sunscreen (transparent Zinc Oxide (Z-Cote®) and titanium dioxide) that offers broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection with no white cast thanks to the sheer, tinted formula. I was worried at first that the tint would be too dark on my fair skin but it blends in seamlessly. It actually does a nice job of subtly evening out my skin tone on no makeup days. The formula also includes artemis salina which is a plankton extract that helps boost skin’s natural defenses and resistance to UV and heat-induced stress.
The KINeSYS Sunscreen Spray ($19.99 CAD) has been my holy grail sunscreen for body for over 9 years. I started purchasing the kids version when my daughter was a baby as it was on the safe cosmetics website with a good rating. I immediately fell in love and now use it for both my kids and myself. They have maintained their pasty white perfection through every summer and it is totally non greasy, non sticky, invisible, and so easy to apply. Sunscreen is no longer a yucky endeavour of poor kids having a greasy white mess rubbed all over them at the beach. I can apply it before school in the morning with speed and ease as well. I have 100% confidence that this is protecting my family from the sun as it has never let me down in almost a decade.
Some new formulas I’ve been trying include the new suncare products from Live Clean. I have a love affair with so many Live Clean products so I was incredibly excited to hear they’d released a Live Clean Face Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 45 ($16.99 CAD) and Live Clean After Sun 98% Aloe Vera Gel ($8.24 CAD) to join the Live Clean Mineral Baby Suncreen SPF 45 and Sport Mineral Sunscreen SPF 45 in the Live Clean family. They are formulated with 98% naturally derived ingredients and are:
- Petrolatum free/ Paraben free/ Phthalate free
- SLS/Sulfate free / Silicone free / Phosphate free / DEA free
- Contains biodegradable ingredients
- Vegetarian formulas
- Dye free

From Alba Botanica I’ve been trying out the new continuous spray formulas. I love the convenience of spray sunscreens! There’s a Sport Continuous Spray Sunscreen SPF 50+ ($16.99 CAD) and the Kids Continous Spray SPF 50+ ($16.99 CAD). For face they have the alba Botanica Facial Sunscreen SPF 40 ($$9.99 CAD) that is formulated with botanicals like aloe vera, ginseng, lavender, and calendula.
Alba Botanica products are vegetarian and cruelty free. They are formulated without parabens, phthalates, artificial colours, propylene glycol, aluminum, mineral oil, petrolatum, oxybenzone, PAB, nano-particles, DEA, MEA or TEA, PEGs and PEG derivitaves, ethoxylated ingredients associated with 1,4 dioxane, formaldehyde donors, or GMOs. Available at Whole Foods, Loblaws, Safeway, Sobeys West, Well.ca, and Amazon.ca.

What a wonderful collection of sunscreen favorites, Christa! I love Alba Botanics, but don’t recall ever having tried their sunscreens! I will need to try them once I use up a few more of my sunscreens.
