When I first starting seeing news emerge that Benefit Cosmetics was releasing a new eyeliner I mistakenly assumed it was just another liquid eyeliner. Boy was I wrong! When I attended the amazingly fun launch event I discovered just how revolutionary the new Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner ($29 CAD/$24 US) really is.

Rather than being a liquid pen liner it is actually a gel liner in click pen packaging. One of the things that makes this product so unique is the AccuFlex™ tip. It is a soft, flexible, latex tip that makes application at any angle more effortless. Another huge bonus as a working makeup artist is that unlike other brush tip or felt tip pen liners you can easily sanitize the tip after use between clients. BONUS! You can see the tip widens out to help push lashes out of the way. This is great because I am always struggling with the decision to curl lashes before or after gel/liquid liner application because I hate them being in the way but also hate mucking up my liner curling afterwards. The base is nice and wide to give more stability to your application.

The gel liner is dispensed through the slit opening you can see in the image below. Prior to each use you will want to squeeze out the dried out product left in the tip from your previous application.

Being a click pen dispensed product there is certainly a learning curve involved when deciding how many clicks suit you for the kind of application you are going for. You can see the product dispensed below.

The gel liner is incredibly intense matte black. A really beautifully pigmented formula. It is a bit on the dry side so you need to be careful to work relatively quickly to apply the product and ensure it is smoothed out. In the beginning when I was using it I was noticing some clumps/buildup in product in some areas in my application that I had missed. Since it is click dispensed you need to spread the product out using the tip for your application. While it sounds kind of tricky once you get the hang of it it is really a beautiful way of applying liner. The AccuFlex™ tip allows you to apply a very fine line easily or something more dramatic.

I have to say this is probably one of the most long wearing waterproof liners I have ever used. It really is incredible. And a bugger to get off! The only issues I can say I have with it are that it is a new method of application and a bit drier formula so you need to get the hang of it and, like is the case with a lot of liners for me, with my less than perfectly taut smooth lids I experience some issues with the product skipping a bit. Pulling my lid tight of course helps drastically with this but maybe due to the drier formulation I found it a little trickier than usual to get a completely smooth line. I do think this is a fabulous new product and gel liner fans are going to love the convenience of this all in one pen. I don’t tend to care for the tight or latex feel of a lot of liquid liners so I will always prefer gel. With the the Benefit they’re Real Push-Up Liner I can have the best of both worlds.

Benefit is also releasing a They’re Real Remover. It is a balm textured waterproof eye makeup remover in some really fabulous packaging. I absolutely love the look of it and the convenience of a squeeze tube for travel.

The Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner will be available in July 2014.
