This week the Beauty Blogger Top Ten team is focusing on primers. I don’t think I recall a time when there has been such an onslaught of new primer releases. Most of these being blurring/pore refining primers. I thought I would share with you ten that, with the exception of my professional kit staple Benefit POREfessional, are all new to the market. I have divided them into categories to make things a little more coherent.
Skincare that Performs as a Primer – Who doesn’t love a product that pulls double duty?
Dior Capture Totale DreamSkin Global Age-Defying Skincare Perfect Skin Creator ($115 CAD) is a new addition to the Capture Totale skincare lineup. This serum is designed to be as effective on the surface of the skin as it is deep down. It has an exclusive and precise blend of two powders, mica platelets with a crystalline mesh and hollow silica microspheres, to smooth skins tone and texture to both sight and touch. It does so invisibly. It also works deep down over time with the powerful age defying floral actives of Longoza extract from the Ranomafana Garden in Madagascar as well as Opilia, a new discovery made in the Dior Garden in Burkina Faso to perfect skin texture. This product addresses pores, firmness, redness, radiance, and dark spots. It’s a true powerhouse due to the fact it acts as a primer to hide these imperfections while it improves them overtime. It also happens to smell incredible and has a lovely light, weightless feel. This will work on any and all skin tones.
Garnier Ultra-Lift Anti-Age Skin Corrector ($22.99 CAD) works to correct wrinkles, radiance, dark spots, uniformity, and firmness with LHA, proretinol, vitamin E, anti-oxidant ginger, and firming peptides. It comes out white with invisible micro-capsules enriched with micro-pigments that are supposed to create a universal shade. I find the shade far too dark on my skin but if you aren’t as fair as I this is a lovely feeling and smelling product to try at a great price.
Illuminating Primers – Due to my dry skin this is probably my favourite category. I am madly in love with all three of these glow giving primers as they are all quite different.
Clarins Instant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base in Rose ($37 CAD) this opalescent pink translucent fluid feels hydrating and gives skin a lovely radiance. It feels really light and I adore the finish of the Rose shade. This is a new permanent product released with the spring collection and it also comes in Champagne and Peach. I am dying to see how the other shades look.
Dior Glow Maximizer ($42 CAD) has quite a strong golden glow. It can be mixed with your foundation to boost skin’s radiance, patted full strength on top of your makeup as a highlighter in light catching areas, or even used sparingly as a primer all over under foundation if you are in dire need of some radiance as I sometimes do.
NARS Pro-Prime Light Optimizing Primer SPF 15 ($38 CAD) has the benefit of light sun protection and it offers a very subtle, completely neutral, illumination to the skin. It contains red algae to revitalize skin as well as Vitamins A, C, and E to ward off free radicals. It really works well as a base and feels very light, absorbing quickly into the skin.
Blurring/Pore Minimizing Primer – These seem to really be the rage these days with many drugstore and higher end brands releasing their own version of this silicone heavy primer. I find these all to be fairly similar so it is all trial and error with liking the feel and scent.
Dior Pore Minimizer ($42 CAD) can be used alone or under foundation to smooth skins texture by filling lines and wrinkles. It has a thick balmy, ultra smooth texture. The soft focus pigments work to even out the complexion. You can even use this lightly over foundation to touch up to matify and diminish pores. I find, like with a lot of these kinds of primers, that if you use too much product you can experience pilling.
Garnier 5 Sec Blur Skin Renew Instant Smoother ($19.99 CAD) has soft focus, mattifying, and wrinkle and pore filling effects to give you that airbrushed effect, with or without makeup, in only seconds thanks to silica spheres and silicone elastomers.
Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser ($10.99 CAD) has a clear gel texture and includes cherry extract. It is an well performing and excellently priced option if you want to give these kinds of silicone based pore blurring primers a try.
Benefit Cosmetics the POREfessional ($36 CAD) is the original Pro Balm to Minimize Pores. This is the only primer I’ve included that isn’t new but how could I not include this cult favourite that has been around since July 2010. It is the primer I use most often in my professional kit to ensure a long lasting air brushed finish.
Targeted Primers
L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Miracle Blur Instant Eye Smoother ($ CAD) is basically a targeted version of a blurring/pore minimizing primer that also includes illuminators to brighten the eye area and a wonderfully cooling applicator. It includes Revitalift’s Pro-Retinol A, vitamin C and specially designed peptide for the eye area to helps improve the delicate skin around eyes and lines, wrinkles, dark circles, and under eye bags look reduced over time. I love that this has long term benefits and works as an eye cream and primer in one. We all know it can be a struggle to find an eye cream that works well under makeup.
